The crowd is not always headed in the right direction. The path of obedience is rarely the most popular one, but it is always the one that leads to the blessing Yehovah desires for His people.
One important truth we should not overlook is that Yehovah told Israel that once they entered the Promised Land, all the commandments they had received would become the standard by which they were to live:
Ye shall observe to do therefore all the statutes and judgments which I set before you this day.
Deuteronomy 11:32
This provides a beautiful picture of our own lives after being redeemed by Yeshua. Before coming to Him, we lived in the world—our own Egypt -separated from God and from His Torah. Then Yeshua rescued us from the bondage of sin -its desires, passions, guilt, fear, and every form of slavery. In a very real sense, we crossed our own Jordan through tevilah (immersion, or baptism), publicly declaring that we had entered a new life.
Just as Israel, once settled in the Promised Land, was responsible for choosing to live according to Yehovah’s statutes and judgments, we also must choose to live according to those same instructions—the very instructions that Yeshua lived, taught, and reaffirmed.
In other words, if we claim to abide in Yeshua, our lives should be governed by His Instructions—Torah. As He plainly declared:
Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
Matthew 5:17
The apostle Yochanan (John) reinforces this same truth:
And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him…
1 John 2:3–6
Why Obey?
Observe and hear all these words which I command thee, that it may go well with thee, and with thy children after thee for ever, when thou doest that which is good and right in the sight of Yehovah thy God.
Deuteronomy 12:28
Notice something important. Nowhere in Scripture, when Yehovah calls His people to obedience, does He say that obedience is what earns eternal life. Instead, His instructions are given so that we may build healthy families, cultivate strong relationships, conduct honest business, and establish a just society that reflects His character before the nations.
Salvation has always been an act of divine mercy, made possible through the sacrifice of Yeshua—a redemption first promised as early as Genesis 3:15.
In other words, Yehovah never intended people to earn salvation by keeping the Torah. That was never its purpose. Rather, throughout Scripture we repeatedly see that walking in His instructions as faithfully as we can leads to a life marked by freedom, blessing, stability, and well-being in this present world.
